Beretta 92FS / 92A1 / 96A1 IWB Kydex Holster
How One Shell Covers All Three Variants
The Beretta 92FS (9mm), 92A1 (9mm), and 96A1 (.40 S&W) share the same slide length of 5.0ā³, height of 5.40ā³, and overall length of 8.54ā³. The practical difference between the 92FS and the A1 models is the dustcover: the 92A1 and 96A1 have an integrated Picatinny rail and a marginally wider dustcover, while the 92FS has a smooth, rail-free dustcover. This shell includes a relief cut at the dustcover that accommodates the A1 series rail without creating functional gaps on the 92FS ā the 92FSās smooth dustcover seats within the same space without interference. Retention indexes off the slide and trigger guard, which are common geometry across all three variants.
Caliber Difference ā No Effect on Fit
The 92A1 and 96A1 are the same pistol in different calibers ā 9mm and .40 S&W respectively. External dimensions are identical between the two. The caliber difference does not alter any surface that contacts the shell.
Slide-Mounted Safety ā Consistent Across All Three
The 92FS, 92A1, and 96A1 all use the same slide-mounted decocker/safety system, with two lever projections on the rear flanks of the slide. There is no difference in slide profile at the safety position across these three variants ā all three present the same contact surface to the shell at that point.
The following variants areĀ not compatibleĀ with this holster:
Beretta 92X / 92X Performance ā different frame and slide geometry
Beretta 92 Compact / Vertec ā shorter barrel and different frame profile
Taurus PT92 / PT100 ā visually similar but frame-mounted safety alters the slide contact surface; requires a dedicated shell
Any variant with a rail-mounted weapon light or laser ā this shell is molded for the bare frame; an attached accessory will prevent correct seating
IWB Carry Considerations for a Full-Size Platform
At 8.54ā³ overall length and approximately 33ā34 oz unloaded, the 92FS/92A1/96A1 family is one of the longest and heaviest platforms in this format for IWB carry. A rigid belt of at least 1.5ā³ width is required to support the weight without the holster sagging or rotating on the beltline. Strong-side carry at the 3ā4 oāclock position with a neutral cant (0°) distributes the pistolās length along the hip where the bodyās natural contours provide support. Appendix carry is possible but the combined weight and 8.54ā³ length make it significantly more demanding than with compact or subcompact platforms ā if appendix is the chosen position, a neutral cant is the most practical option.
Shell Construction
Full Kydex construction throughout. The trigger guard is fully enclosed within the mold from holster entry through the base of the guard. When the pistol reaches full seating depth, the Kydex snaps back at the retention contact point, confirming seating audibly. The sweat guard extends behind the slide, keeping the rear of the frame off direct skin contact during IWB carry.
Retention and Cant
The retention screw is accessible from the exterior of the shell and adjustable without removing the holster from the belt. At 33ā34 oz unloaded, these pistols carry more momentum during movement than compact platforms ā set retention firm enough to hold the pistol through full inversion before daily carry. Cant adjusts from 0° to 15° at the belt clip.
Maintenance
Keep the shell away from sustained heat sources. Clean with a damp cloth only ā avoid solvents and abrasive materials. Check and tighten retention and clip screws at regular intervals. Do not apply lubricant to the screw hardware ā lubricant attracts debris and promotes retention drift over time.
